The visitor logs of many websites can be accessed by just typing in
http://www.domainname.com/stats/
or something similar into the web browser.
This happens because many web hosts provide some log analysis script and then leave the statistics page wide open. We know quite a few shared web hosting companies that do this (and one of them is very well known!). Almost every one who hosts their websites using these services will have their visitor logs public.
This may also involve serious security and privacy risks
Your website log contains a lot of information and some of it may compromise your security and the privacy of your visitors.
For example, the site logs contain important data like...
- Email addresses and passwords that are part of URLs (especially if you allow your site visitors to login, etc.)
- Hidden URLs that are not meant to be made public
- Data from your advertising campaigns
- Links to parts of your web pages that are only for internal use
- Details about your partners and other sites that send you traffic
- Keywords that bring you traffic
- Information about your top performing pages
